UTEP vs Oklahoma Prediction, Picks & Odds — Sep 4, 2026

Adebawore Stayed, and UTEP's Patchwork Line has to Block Him

Oklahoma led the country in sacks and tackles for loss, kept its most decorated Pass rusher, and now meets a UTEP offense built out of four new linemen, an unsettled quarterback race and one 929-yard receiver.

UTEP rebuilt itself through the transfer portal this offseason, and it built from below. Fifteen of Scotty Walden's 21 portal additions came from outside FBS, including both quarterbacks in the camp race and all three interior offensive linemen. That roster's first assignment is Norman, against the defense that led all of college football last season in sacks (41) and tackles for loss (116).

Oklahoma's own turnover is narrower. John Mateer is back for a redshirt-senior year after 2,885 passing yards and 431 rushing yards, but only 43 percent of last season's receiving production returns and 16 of those 41 sacks walked out the door. What the Sooners kept is the problem UTEP has to solve on its opening series: five-star edge Adepoju Adebawore, who entered the portal in January, withdrew, and is penciled in at right end.

When UTEP has the ball

The Miners' projected line is four transfers and one holdover: left tackle Jaymon Lamb (North Texas), left guard Jackson Bradley (Cornell), center Brian Williams Jr. (Jackson State), right guard Omoruyi Aliu-Otokiti (Division II Livingstone) and right tackle Tyler Roberts, a first-year player. Williams is not on UTEP's current roster, leaving the pivot, the man who identifies Oklahoma's fronts, unsettled days from kickoff.

Oklahoma did lose pieces up front: R Mason Thomas (6.5 sacks), Taylor Wein (6.0) and Gracen Halton (3.5), plus corner Kani Walker (11 breakups) and linebacker Lewis Carter (92 tackles). The half that stayed governs this matchup. Adebawore at end, David Stone and Jayden Jackson inside, linebackers Kip Lewis (72 tackles, three sacks) and Owen Heinecke (67 and two), safety Peyton Bowen (43 tackles, seven breakups, two interceptions). Oklahoma ranked third nationally at stopping runs at or behind the line; UTEP's offense ranked 126th of 136 in how often it got stopped there, with a more settled line than this one.

Oklahoma41 sacks (#1), 9 INT (#63), 42 PD (#44)
Last season's defense — disruption and takeaways (national rank)

Behind that line is an FCS quarterback. EJ Colson leads a camp battle that is not settled, after throwing for 2,142 yards and 16 touchdowns at Incarnate Word; his entire FBS body of work is 16 attempts at UCF in 2024. Raymond Moore III (878 yards, eight touchdowns at Morgan State) has never taken an FBS snap. Whoever wins the job has one outlet, Cheeks, on quick throws that beat the rush, and taking Cheeks away is the easiest call Brent Venables' staff will make all afternoon. In games shaped like this one, a top-ten disruption front against a non-power underdog, the favorite has won 51 of 52 since 2014, holding the underdog to 10 points or fewer 69 percent of the time.

When Oklahoma has the ball

Mateer is settled; his receiver room is not. Deion Burks (57 catches, 620 yards), tight end Jaren Kanak (44-533) and Keontez Lewis are gone, and Isaiah Sategna III (65 catches, 949 yards, eight touchdowns) is roughly 70 percent of what returns. The replacements arrived in January: Trell Harris from Virginia (59-847-5), Parker Livingstone from Texas (29-516-6, nearly 18 yards a catch), tight ends Hayden Hansen (Florida) and Rocky Beers (Colorado State). Protection is the settled part, four returning linemen plus Arkansas transfer E'Marion Harris at right tackle. They face a UTEP secondary that intercepted five passes all last season, 113th nationally, and returns almost none of that group; corner Justin Content (58 tackles, six breakups) withdrew from the portal and is back at left corner, with safeties Xavier Smith and Kode Lowe behind him.

On the ground the ranks point the other way, and both sides of that matchup have changed hands. Oklahoma's run game ranked 123rd and returns all of it: Xavier Robinson (83 carries, 421 yards) and Tory Blaylock (120-482) are back in the same roles, with Colorado State's Lloyd Avant (90-417-5) added. Mateer took 149 carries himself, a third of the attempts and eight of the 18 rushing touchdowns, so Sooner yardage on the ground will mostly come from the quarterback. UTEP's run defense ranked 20th, but that grade belongs to Micah Davey (131 tackles), Oscar Moore, Solo Barnes and Udoka Ezeani, none of them on the roster. The room now is Texas Southern transfer Isaiah Bogerty, Garrett Hawkins, sophomore Vashon Brunswick II and three freshmen, and UTEP allowed the second-most points per possession in the country. Four-star back Jonathan Hatton Jr. headlines a 12-blue-chip Oklahoma class ranked 16th, help that arrives later.

The floor, the ceiling and the swing

Oklahoma's floor is the methodical version: drives stalling at the 25 while Mateer and five new pass-catchers work out the timing, a final nearer 31-10. The ceiling is short fields. If Adebawore and Stone live in the backfield and the ball comes loose two or three times, the Sooners reach the mid-50s and the starters watch the fourth quarter in ballcaps. A one-score finish is close to unheard of here; a win of 20 or more comes about nine times in ten, and the realistic band runs from an Oklahoma win by 20 to one by 56.

The range of outcomes for this game. Each bar is how often the final margin lands in that range — the more it leans toward Oklahoma, the more likely Oklahoma wins.

Keys to the number

Clearing 41 is a different job than winning. Oklahoma has to score on nearly every possession, and it ranked 62nd in points per scoring chance a year ago, a middling number to lift in one week. It has to be multiple scores up by halftime, the likeliest item on its checklist; the risk is not defeat but a comfortable three-score win that backups shave late. And it needs the turnover battle by two, the short-field path past 41. The team that wins the giveaway column takes about three quarters of all games since 2014 (n=7,903), and 74.7 percent of games priced like this one (n=75). Style cuts against them: Oklahoma ranked 64th in explosiveness, a methodical offense that grinds out long drives and tops out short of a number this size.

UTEP's checklist is shorter and more achievable. The Miners need a low-scoring game, the likeliest thing either side has going, because fewer possessions mean fewer chances for Oklahoma to pull away. They need to at least tie the turnover column, a reasonable ask. Bleeding clock with long drives and manufacturing an extra possession on fourth down or special teams are long shots against this front. On balance UTEP's keep-it-close criteria are the more achievable set: a methodical favorite clears this number about one time in five.

Keys to the coverHow likely
▸ For Oklahoma to cover -41~21% to cover
Score on nearly every possession — a top points-per-chance day, not just big playscoin-flip-ish
Break the methodical mold — chunk scores, not just long drivesunlikely
Win the turnover battle by 2+ — short fields are the fast path past 41coin-flip-ish
Bury the dog early — no slow start that keeps it a one-score game into the third quarterlean yes
▸ For UTEP +41~79% to cover
Shorten the game — bleed clock and hold possessions downunlikely
Force a low-scoring, low-variance game — kill the favorite's extra possessionslikely
Win or tie the turnover battle — no gift-wrapped short fieldslean yes
Steal a possession — cash a fourth-down or special-teams play for an extra driveunlikely
What each side needs to beat the number, and how achievable it is. Edge to UTEP +41: our projection has the favorite covering only 21% of the time — a methodical favorite that lands 3 points short of the number, with the dog's keep-it-close criteria (clock control, even turnovers) more achievable than the favorite's blowout stack.

The bottom Line

Oklahoma wins, better than 19 in 20, and by roughly 37. The variable shows up on UTEP's first two possessions. If Lamb, Bradley and whoever ends up at center hold long enough for the quarterback to find Cheeks on time, the Miners scratch out a touchdown or two and this stays one-sided but orderly. If Adebawore is in the backfield on first down, it is finished by the middle of the second quarter.
