ULM sacked nobody: not Kamario Taylor, not Parker Puckett

Jeff Lebby is in year three at Mississippi State, coming off 5-8, and the only public standard for Saturday was the one he set himself: Kamario Taylor starting all 13 games. Nick Saban had said in July that Taylor "could be the truth and the light now. He is really, really good," per On3. UL Monroe went 3-9 in 2025, and that record is the only denominator this result has. Winning 62-13 with a school-record 762 yards does not settle year three.

Nobody on ULM's front reached either quarterback

The one number that reorganizes anything here is a protection number. Bring Me The Sports counted Taylor "pressured on only 6 of 40 dropbacks against ULM." CBS Sports, in August, had put him at 46.2 percent of his dropbacks in 2025. Neither outlet names a charting provider, and the two disagree on last season's denominator, 108 against 106, so this is not one measurement taken twice. It is still the widest gap on the page.

Three things could produce it: Taylor's release, a rebuilt line, or a front that could not win. Troy Reffett was promoted from inside Bryant Vincent's staff after Earnest Hill, the coordinator through 2025, moved to assistant head coach and cornerbacks, and his 3-3 stack got no sacks and one tackle for loss, shared by Kelbee Holmes and LaZavier Amos. "We didn't get to the quarterback at all," Vincent said, per The BANNER. Parker Puckett relieved Taylor and was not sacked either.

That last fact is what points at the front rather than at Taylor. The line was mostly new: Canon Boone, who started every game in 2025, is the only returning starter, with Miles McVay from North Carolina, DJ Chester from LSU and LJ Prudhomme from Arkansas around him. Phil Loadholt served a one-game NCAA suspension over a secondary violation Mississippi State called "fully resolved through the standard NCAA procedures," per the Clarion Ledger. Which of the four held up individually is not in any box score.

Kamario Taylor had three touchdowns before the first quarter ended

Taylor threw for 354 yards on 34 attempts with four touchdowns and ran for 59 more. The game closed inside the first quarter: a 17-yard throw to Anthony Evans III on third-and-6 at Q1 14:23, Sanfrisco Magee's six-yard touchdown catch at 12:21, Zion Ragins on a 22-yarder at 10:20, and at 5:58, on third-and-4, Taylor running 26 yards into the end zone himself. Evans finished with seven catches for 118 yards on 10 targets.

The longest throw opened the second half, 70 yards to Marquis Johnson at Q3 13:36, and Todd McShay's post about it drew more than 2.3 million views. ESPN's box has Johnson at three catches for 99 yards, long of 70. Sam Sklar wrote in the Clarion Ledger that Taylor "perfectly placed the deep pass through contact." Lebby, on that throw: "There's very few that can do it. He does."

J.J. Hill and Kolin Wilson ran at the middle of it

Hill carried seven times for 118 yards and scored from 57 at Q4 7:50 and from eight at 2:44, both up the middle. Kolin Wilson's 48-yard run at Q2 1:35 went middle too, worth better than four points of expected value. Xavier Gayten added 28 yards on three carries and a 14-yard touchdown at Q2 0:35, and Puckett threw for 63 yards in relief and converted third-and-7 with a 17-yard run at Q4 5:12.

Zach Arnett's first night back held UL Monroe to 278 yards

Arnett ran this defense from 2020 to 2022, was promoted after Mike Leach died, and was fired 10 games into 2023. After 2024 at Ole Miss and 2025 at Florida State, Mississippi State hired him back on Dec. 6, 2025, the day it fired Coleman Hutzler, per 247Sports. Hutzler's defenses gave up 34.1 points, 456.4 yards and 216.9 rushing yards a game in 2024, then roughly 29 points, 406 yards and 189.5 rushing yards in 2025, a season that ended with five straight games allowing 35 or more.

Hutzler's 2025 base is listed as a 3-4 and Arnett's 2026 base as a 3-3-5, labels taken from team-page infoboxes rather than a media guide. The firmer evidence is a staff carrying a standalone nickels coach, Kevie Thompson, which is what a five-defensive-back base looks like on a payroll. Maroon and White Nation called the hire shocking the day it happened, noting how rarely a fired head coach returns as a coordinator at the same school. Hold Saturday's 278 against Hutzler's 456.4, not against a ULM norm nobody has published.

Trevion Williams got the one clean sack with a tackle for loss beside it; Amaree Williams and Dealyn Evans split the other. Fatt Forrest was in on 3.5 tackles, and Bralan Womack and Dre Riley each broke up a pass. Expected points denied has no published distribution to sit against, so the only scale it carries is its own spread: Williams took 1.7 off the board, ULM's Armoni Rue and Jaeden Calender 0.3 apiece.

Mississippi State produced 17 gains of 15 yards or more to UL Monroe's three, on 79 offensive snaps to 68, and scored on 77 percent of its 13 drives against 23 percent for the Warhawks, who went three-and-out on 61.5 percent of their 13. Taylor was involved in nine of the 17, Evans in four, Hill in three, Puckett in three. Setting that against his share of the snaps does not work: our play-by-play has him on 39 plays, the outside charting at 40 dropbacks and six carries.

We had Mississippi State by 24 before kickoff; the margin was 49. That read leaned hardest on last season's body of work, 14.2 points of the number, which for this team meant 5-8, and it had no way to price a quarterback with two career starts. FanDuel posted 28.5 and landed closer. One game cannot separate a forecaster from a market, and this is a single draw with no second Mississippi State result beside it yet.

Minnesota opened as a 1.5-point favorite for Week 2, per Bring Me The Sports, and 247Sports' Steve Robertson now has Mississippi State by 1.5, the program's first road game as a favorite since 2022 at Arizona. "He'll be one of the best quarterbacks we've ever played," P.J. Fleck said of Taylor, per the Clarion Ledger. That game is the test: if Taylor goes untouched again behind the same five linemen, the line was the cause. BetMGM has him at +12500 for the Heisman he said he wants.
