Florida Atlantic vs Florida Prediction, Picks & Odds — Sep 5, 2026
Jadan Baugh runs at the country's fifth-worst run defense
Two 4-8 teams, but only one can stop the run, and Florida Atlantic's whole answer to 26.5 points is Caden Veltkamp's arm.
What follows is the preview as it was published before kickoff — unedited.
Box score, drives and the model's numbers →Both teams went 4-8 last season and one of them is laying 26.5 points. The gap is real but not that wide: Florida projects to win 31-18, thirteen points. The last meeting, in 2021, ended with Florida Atlantic losing by 21, a clear defeat that would still have covered this number, and the distance between these rosters looks about the same now.
The range of outcomes for this game. Each bar is how often the final margin lands in that range — the more it leans toward Florida, the more likely Florida wins.
Florida runs at the fifth-worst run defense in the country
Florida Atlantic finished 132nd of 136 against the run and did nothing in the offseason to fix it. Thirty players left against 22 arrivals, a position-weighted net of minus 37, and a class ranked 123rd with zero blue-chips brings nobody who patches a front seven in September. Jonathan Bax, a three-star edge from TCU, is the one addition on that side of the ball with a starting résumé behind him.
Florida's rushing offense ranked 54th and returns 89% of that production, which matters more than the rank does: this is the same unit, not a new one wearing last year's grade. Jadan Baugh carried 58% of the load and projects for 79 to 126 yards with a 50% touchdown chance. Duke Clark, on an 11% rush share, graded out better per play on far fewer carries.
Florida's ground game against that front is worth roughly nine-tenths of a standard deviation, the widest edge on the field. It also dictates how Florida reaches 31 points: on the ground, in long possessions, which caps the number of drives Florida Atlantic gets to answer with. A team scoring that way piles up margin slowly, and that is why the projected 13-point gap sits so far short of 26.5.
Veltkamp is the reason this doesn't get away early
Caden Veltkamp has three FBS seasons of record and +0.229 career EPA per play; Aaron Philo has two and +0.113. Veltkamp is the more productive quarterback on the larger body of evidence, and his job is not in question. He is also the only piece of this matchup pointing toward Florida Atlantic, which means the underdog needs him closer to the top of his range than the middle of it.
Florida Atlantic's passing offense ranked 41st against a Florida pass defense that ranked 91st, the lone unit battle the underdog wins. Seventy percent of that passing production is back, including Easton Messer at +0.65 EPA per play on a 21% target share and Dom Henry at +0.63 on an 11% share. Veltkamp projects for 221 to 315 yards with an 83% touchdown chance; Messer for 51 to 100.
Throwing is the only avenue. Florida Atlantic's rushing offense ranked 104th against a Florida run defense that ranked 53rd, so Kaden Shields-Dutton's 19-to-54-yard projection is not a threat Florida has to honor. Myles Graham, 76 tackles and four passes defensed, and Jaden Robinson can sit on routes without being punished for it, and Veltkamp's yardage band comes against a defense free to defend one dimension.
Three interceptions in an entire season is not a defense
Florida Atlantic intercepted three passes all of last season, 128th nationally and near the floor of the sport. Cornerback Lawrence Johnson then left for Florida International, subtracting a starter from a secondary that was already generating nothing. Down two scores in the second half, Florida Atlantic has no way to buy possessions back, and Veltkamp would have to earn every yard of a comeback against a defense sitting on a lead.
Florida is no wrecking crew either: 60 tackles for loss ranked 92nd and 26 sacks ranked 58th. Its ten interceptions ranked 55th, ordinary everywhere except next to Florida Atlantic's three. Kamran James, 3.5 sacks off the edge, is the player who has to get home early, because a 91st-ranked secondary asked to cover Messer and Henry for four seconds at a time is how this game stays close.
Florida Atlantic's pass rush is its best defensive trait: Deshaun Batiste (4.0 sacks), CJ Doggette Jr. (3.5) and Josh Roberts (3.0) all return from a unit that ranked 75th in sacks. They meet a Florida line rebuilt through the portal with Emeka Ugorji from Stanford, and how quickly that group settles decides whether Philo has time in an offense that ranked 110th throwing it last season.
Florida is churning depth; Florida Atlantic is losing starters
Florida and Florida Atlantic both gave up more than they took in, and the two ledgers mean opposite things. Florida sent DJ Lagway to Baylor and Aidan Mizell to UCLA, then added Eric Singleton Jr. from Auburn on top of a 13th-ranked class with 14 blue-chips. Florida Atlantic's 30 departures include left tackle Daughtry Richardson, and the replacements are three-stars, so the line in front of Veltkamp is the least knowable unit here.
The genuine unknown on Florida's side is the passing game: 110th last season with 73% of that production back, continuity with a poor baseline rather than a reason for optimism. Vernell Brown III, at +0.55 EPA per play on a 16% target share, projects for 26 to 84 receiving yards. Dallas Wilson, four games played last season, carries a 55% touchdown chance, the sharpest red-zone number on either roster.
Each ingredient of our projection and the side it favors — bars toward Florida are why it's the pick (home field is counted separately).
The underdog's Case for +26.5
Florida Atlantic's route is narrow and real: Veltkamp near the top of his range against a 91st-ranked pass defense, an even turnover count, and enough clock control to hold Baugh's carry total down. The projection has Florida covering only 20% of the time, with the underdog's keep-it-close conditions easier to meet than the favorite's blowout stack, though a margin of 20 or more still sits at 37%.
Florida wins this by handing the ball off
Florida should treat the 132nd-ranked run defense as the entire plan, feed Baugh, use Clark on change-ups, and let Wilson finish drives inside the twenty rather than asking a 110th-ranked passing game to carry the scoreboard. Florida Atlantic needs Messer and Henry winning outside, Batiste and Doggette Jr. making Philo uncomfortable, and at least one takeaway from a defense that produced three interceptions all of last season.
