Idaho vs. Utah: Final Score & Recap

What we projected, and where we were wrong

Before kickoff our model made Utah a 16.9-point favorite with an 86.6% chance to win, and it got there almost entirely on one input: last season's body of work, worth 11.3 points of the projected margin by itself. The quarterback comparison added 1.4 more for Utah. The only factor pointing the other way was the transfer portal, and it moved four-tenths of a point toward Idaho. That is a thin projection by construction, a season opener with no 2026 games on either side and a preseason prior doing all the work.

We had the right side and badly the wrong size: Utah won by 52, and we said 17, a miss of five touchdowns. Against the number we were worse. The market had Utah favored by 37.5 and we had them by 16.9, so our lean was Idaho and the points by a wide margin, and Utah covered by 14.5. Margin is the calibrated strength of this model, and even the calibrated part missed Utah by 35.

Where the projection held up is unit by unit. We had Utah's offense as a strength against an average Idaho defense, and it produced a 57.1% success rate. We had Idaho's offense as merely average, and it finished at 33.9%. Both projected edges showed up, so the shape of the game was right. The distance between Utah and Idaho was simply further than a preseason rating could see, and the rest of this piece is about which parts of that distance Utah gets to keep.

The turnovers weren't the story. The eight minutes after them were.

Idaho climbed back into this. Down 17-0 in the second quarter, it put together the best drive either team had all night: 13 plays, 75 yards, including a fourth-and-1 conversion at the Utah 19 that Hayden Kincheloe took for four. Kincheloe scored from the 3 at 9:40, and it was 17-7 with most of a half to play. On the evidence of that drive, Thomas Ford Jr. had something to point at afterward.

Obviously not the performance we were looking for. I felt like we took some good swings, especially early, and I never thought the group stopped fighting. But we just did not play well enough to stay in the game with a very, very good football team.

Then Idaho ran 12 plays on its next four possessions and lost a net yard. The drives went minus-7, plus-6, minus-1, plus-1, all three-and-out punts. The mechanism wasn't disaster plays, it was Idaho failing on schedule. Idaho ran 24 first-down snaps and averaged 2.42 yards on them, with 45.8% gaining nothing or less. That put 76.9% of its third downs at seven or more yards to go, and Idaho converted three of 13. Utah, on the same field on the same night, averaged 8.61 yards per first-down snap, faced 4.58 yards to go on third down, and converted eight of 12.

That gap is the 66-14 scoreboard, and there is a fairly precise way to price it. Since 2014, 194 games have featured a 28-point-or-bigger underdog going three-and-out or worse on 60% of its possessions. Those teams are 0-194, losing by an average of 47.2 points and scoring 5.7. The big underdogs who stayed under 60% lost by 34.7 and scored 12.7, and covered 53.6% of the time against 34.0% for the collapsers. Inside the same class of mismatch, the three-and-out rate is worth roughly 12 points of margin and 20 points of cover rate, because every dead series hands the favorite another possession and a shorter field. Utah started five of its 13 drives inside its own 45 and still averaged 48.3 yards a possession.

For Idaho, the consoling half of that history is stronger than the damning half. Among comparable teams with a next game, the three-and-out rate fell from 65.2% to 32.0% the following week, and only 3.8% ever did it again. For the FCS teams specifically, Idaho's own class and nearly all of them in money games like this one, the rest-of-season rate averaged 32.1%, and only seven of 66 stayed above 40%. Tested against a full season, the collapse carries almost no information about what a team is: 33.7% versus 32.6%, not a significant difference. Idaho's 2025 baseline of roughly one drive in three sits right on that reverted average. This was a mismatch signature, not a diagnosis.

Idaho's chunk plays came from the last place it was aiming

Here is the strangest number in the game: both offenses drew exactly the same share of their yardage from explosive plays. Utah got 325 of its 633 yards on gains of 15-plus, Idaho 116 of its 227, 51% each. The difference was the floor underneath. On every non-explosive snap Utah averaged 4.97 yards and Idaho averaged 1.98. Idaho gained 111 yards on 56 ordinary snaps across four quarters.

And the chunks Idaho did get came from nowhere near where the offense was pointed. Joshua Wood was 0-for-6 for zero yards on throws charted deep, and all six of Idaho's deep attempts were his. Idaho's two biggest plays were a 44-yard gain on a throw the play-by-play marks short left, caught by Noah West-Baranco at the Idaho 40 on second-and-12, and the 22-yard Wood scramble touchdown that catch set up. Idaho produced its entire 227-yard night without completing a single downfield throw.

That profile, a bottom-fifth conversion rate with explosive quality matching the opponent's, shows up 2,812 times in team-games since 2014, and those teams went 18.4% with an average margin of minus-18.3. The chunks are still worth something. Among all bottom-fifth offenses, the ones that generated big plays won 19.9% and scored 16.4 points; the ones that didn't won 9.8% and scored 9.1. Narrow it to FCS teams playing up and the split is the whole scoreboard: 355 such games with chunks averaged 11.3 points, 351 without averaged 6.0. Idaho's 14 sits on the good side of that line. When Idaho can't move it on two of every three snaps, the big play isn't a luxury, it is the only scoring mechanism the offense has, and it is one broken tackle from being shut out. The trade Ford has to make is about where those chunks come from, because a quarterback scramble and a 22-yard underneath throw are the two least repeatable sources on the field. The encouraging part is the regression: in 87.6% of comparable cases the success rate jumped the very next week, from .292 to .406, and the win rate went from 18.4% to 43.4%. Teams do not usually look like this twice.

Utah's red zone ran through the backfield

Utah snapped it 21 times inside the Idaho 20 and threw on only seven of those snaps. Four of the seven went to running backs. Wayshawn Parker caught two of them for touchdowns, a 9-yarder on second-and-4 in the first quarter and a 3-yarder on second-and-3 to end the half; Hunter Andrews caught the other two, a 5-yard conversion on third-and-3 and a 9-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter. Three of Utah's five receiving touchdowns went to backs. Parker added a 21-yard touchdown run on which he shed several tacklers, and finished with 12 carries for 71 yards and three catches for 23, the first three-touchdown game of his career.

I was just going out there being confident in my O-line and the whole team. We've been waiting since January and it was time to show what it's going to be like this whole year.

Set against Parker's own history, that line is a spike rather than an emergence. In all of 2025 he caught 13 passes for 185 yards and three receiving touchdowns, and never had more than one receiving score in a game. He collected two-thirds of a season's worth in one night on 23 receiving yards. The shape is rare: a back with eight or more carries who also catches multiple touchdown passes on three or fewer receptions turns up in 2.3% of all multi-receiving-touchdown player games across 2024 and 2025, the only two seasons with an official player box to query. The version Utah posted, with three of its receiving touchdowns going to backs, happened exactly once in those two seasons.

What that rarity predicts is unhappy for anyone hoping Utah has found a plan. The 15 comparable teams went 12-3 and beat the closing spread by an average of 12.7 points, which is the fingerprint of an outlier night rather than a formula. The players never did it twice: none of the 24 backs with a later game that season posted another multi-touchdown receiving day, 16 of the 24 caught no touchdowns at all the rest of the year, and their scoring rate afterward was identical to their rate before. The counterweight is what's actually worth tracking. Larry Simmons scored six receiving touchdowns on 15 catches in 2025, the most efficient scoring target Utah had, and here he saw two targets, caught both for 41 yards, and drew zero looks inside the 20. If the running-back share of Utah's red-zone throws stays near 57% against a secondary that can cover, that is a tendency. If it snaps back toward the 11% of receiving touchdowns backs got in all of 2025, this was one night against an FCS opponent.

The same throw, twice, from the same yard line

Two of Utah's plays belong side by side. At 1:39 of the first quarter, first-and-10 from the Idaho 42, Dampier threw deep right to Braden Pegan, caught at the Idaho 13 for 31 yards. At 13:30 of the third quarter, first-and-10 from the Idaho 42, Dampier threw deep right to Braden Pegan, caught at the Idaho 13 for 30 yards. Same down, same distance, same line of scrimmage, same direction, same receiver, same catch point, with different Idaho defenders arriving: Aaron Kinsey the first time, Mika Roberson the second. Utah scored on the very next snap both times, Parker's 21-yard run in the first quarter and Pegan's own 12-yard touchdown run in the third. Two identical calls, roughly 14 points.

Now the deflating part. Those were Dampier's only two completions on seven deep attempts all night, and the seven together cost Utah 0.40 expected points a play. On everything else he was 11-of-11 for 115 yards at plus-1.53, which is roughly the difference between an offense that scores 66 and one that punts. Utah's explosiveness on passing downs was 1.86, just under the national median of 1.93. The vertical game produced two spectacular repeats and almost nothing else.

The tendency Utah didn't have last year

Utah threw deep on 11 of its 26 dropbacks, a 42.3% rate. Across the 2025 games whose play-by-play carries depth tags, the rate was 20.6%, with a single-game high of 30%. The sharpest version of the change came on short yardage. On second, third or fourth down with two or fewer to go, Utah threw on four of eight snaps, and three of those eight were deep shots. Across 89 such snaps in all of 2025, Utah threw on 15.7% of them and took zero deep shots. Eight snaps is a flag rather than a finding. The zero, spread over 13 games, is not.

Utah's call failed twice and won once, all in this game. Back-to-back deep incompletions on second-and-1 and third-and-1 from Utah's own 33, at 5:27 and 5:21 of the first quarter, produced the only three-down failure Utah had in the first half and a punt at 10-0. The same idea on fourth-and-1 from the Idaho 35 in the third quarter produced backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin's 35-yard touchdown to Noah Bennee, caught at the Idaho 9. Utah's only trip inside the Idaho 25 that came away with nothing was an eight-play, 56-yard drive stopped on downs at the 3 with 8:09 left in the third, Ficklin's fourth-down throw falling incomplete to Mana Carvalho at the goal line. Neither team missed a field goal; Curtis's 24-yarder was Utah's only attempt, and it was good.

So the deep ball was a coin flip. The underneath game was the freak. Utah converted 73.3% of its passing downs, a rate that sits in the 99.8th percentile of all 24,716 team-games since 2014 against a league mean of .319, and it was 20 points better on passing downs than on standard downs, an inversion only 0.43% of team-games produce and one Utah never reached once in 13 games last season. There are 48 comparable team-games across 12 seasons. Zero of the 48 repeated the pattern the following week. Their passing-down conversion fell from .734 to .332, within a point of the national average. They kept winning, 82% the next week and 62% the rest of the season, because they were better teams, not because the number held. Utah's own 2025 opener against UCLA is the cleanest precedent available: the same spike at .727, then .389 across the next 11 games, and a 9-2 finish anyway.

What travels, and what doesn't

The honest ledger from a 52-point win over an FCS opponent is shorter than the scoreboard. What travels: Dampier's decision-making, 13-of-18 for 176 yards and three touchdown passes plus 31 rushing yards on six carries; a run game Utah leaned on for 49 of its 75 snaps; and a backup in Ficklin who threw two more touchdown passes. What history says does not travel: the 73.3% passing-down conversion, the 11-of-11 underneath, and Parker's two red-zone receiving touchdowns, all three of them outlier events with essentially no repeat rate in the data. Comparable teams saw their overall success rate fall from .561 to .449 the next time they faced an FBS opponent, and their margins halved from 23.8 points to 9.5.

There was a lot to love about this. We know that the quality of opponents is just going to go up from here on out. But for a first game, we wanted to be clean. We wanted to play as a team.

Scalley also said the night wasn't about him, "I just wanted our players to show what our culture is all about," and Dampier described a head coach with "an energy and a calmness in us to do our thing." Our model made Utah the pick, it was right about which units would win, and it still missed by 35 points, because a preseason rating cannot measure the distance between a Big 12 roster and a Big Sky one. The tests are ahead. For Utah, watch the red-zone script and whether the checkdown-heavy passing game holds against a secondary that can cover. For Idaho, ignore the turnover column and watch the first-down average, because 2.42 yards a snap is the number that buried them, and it is the number history says comes back.
